Plate, 9.125 inches diameter. Brown transfer with polychrome clobbering and gilding. Maker is Wallis Gimson & Co. The L S & S initials refer to Lewis Straus & Sons, a retailer in New York City from 1875 to the early-20th century. The pattern Garfield, features transfer border design of stylized floral images, patterned bands, floral sprays, and large cabbage roses, each with a tiny butterfly disguised in the foliage, that trail in towards the center. In the center, a large fish swims behind a spray of seaweed.
Gimson specialized in making ware in a series such as ‘The World’ and ‘Achievements of Notable Victorians.’ In February the partnership between Joseph Gimson Jr. and Thomas Wallis Gimson was dissolved and Thomas W. Gimson continued on his own account. At the time of bankruptcy of the business it was Thomas Wallis Gimson who was trading as Wallis Gimson & Co.
