Plate, 8.375 x 8.375 inches. Brown transfer. Printed maker's mark for Thomas Hughes. This pattern features a rectangular cartouche with an image of two deer grazing inside. The cartouche is laid over maidenhair fern fronds and other foliage. Sprigs of fern and foliage appear at three other points around the rim of the plate.
In 1820 Thomas Hughes established the Waterloo Road Works. These works were carried on by him and then his successors Stephen Hughes & Co. until about 1856. From c. 1855 to 1881 Thomas Hughes (grandson of the original potter) continued in the works. He enlarged, improved and modernized the works. In 1881 Hughes moved to the Top Bridge Works. In 1883/84 Mellor, Taylor & Co. took over the Top Bridge Works. Thomas Hughes (& Son) moved to the Unicorn Pottery.
