Gravy boat, 8.5 x 3 x 4.25 inches and underplate, 8 x 4.5 inches. Black transfer. Printed maker's mark for Whittaker & Co. The Rd. No. dates the pattern registration to 1886. The underplate pattern features a wide, folded ribbon cartouche divided into three segments is the central feature of this pattern. The ribbon scrolls from upper left to lower right with a cluster of floral sprays floating across the middle geometric segment. The two end segments resemble diamonds on the side and are filled with images of a sailboat in one and a teepee sitting amongst trees in the other. The border consists of triangles filled with geometric patterns alternating with simple, stylized floral motifs. The pattern on the gravy boat is identical, except the motifs consist of a different sailing boat and a village with a bell tower amongst the trees.
