Plate, 10.5 inches diameter. Black transfer with polychrome clobbering. Printed maker's mark for Coalport Porcelain Works (John Rose & Co.). This pattern was produced after c. 1891, but it harkens to earlier Romantic patterns featuring Oriental themes. Here the central image depicts a mass of overlarge, stylized flowers with a butterfly in the foreground with a pagoda-type building in the right background and surrounded by a band filled with a repeated geometric pattern interrupted by single stylized flowers. The wide border consists of a repeated motif of overlarge flowers and spiraling leaves.
