Platter, 13 x 10 inches. Brown transfer. Impressed maker's marks for W. T. Copeland & Sons. The impressed "I89" indicates a manufacture date of November 1889. The border, known as "Arabesque," is seen on all the patterns in this series. The central pattern features a large round uchiwa fan with a scene of a tall Egyptian obelisk on the banks of a river framed by palms. Two people are seen at the base of the obelisk. This scene is framed in the foreground by irises. To the left of the fan is a round cartouche with three songbirds in flight. Two butterflies and an insect fly around the edges of the well. All the cartouches are laid over stalks of bamboo.
