Platter, 11 x 9 inches. Brown transfer. Printed maker's mark for Whittaker, Edge & Co. The Rd. No. indicates a pattern registration date of 1884. This stylized pattern features an oval-shaped cartouche in the well composed of alternating pie-shaped wedges filled with triangular spirals and folding fans decorated with flowers. The cartouche is bordered by a chain pattern and a repeating pattern of connected diamonds and dots. The wide border consists of the same alternating wedges with the geometric borders.
Whittaker, Edge & Co. was part of a brief series of partnerships of earthenware manufacturers, operating the Hallfield Pottery, built in 1882, in Hanley, Staffordshire. The original partners were Lewis Whittaker, James Edge, Samuel Heath, John Henry Weatherby, and Robert Rowley. Whittaker, Edge & Co.: 1882-1886. Whittaker & Co.: 1886-1892. Whittaker, Heath & Co.: 1892-1898.
