Plate, 9 inches diameter. Brown transfer. Printed maker's mark for Smith, Ford & Jones. The numbers of 1889 seen in the printed mark refer to the year the potter began his business. "Semi Porcelain" is a term used in the late-19th century by many potteries to depict a higher quality of earthenware that was developed, more closely resembling porcelain although it is not translucent. The pattern is a border only pattern with apparently anemone flowers, buds, and leaves gracefully arranged in an asymmetrical pattern.
There were three successive partnerships: Smith, Ford & Jones, Smith & Ford, and then Samuel Ford & Co. of Lincoln Pottery, Burslem, Staffordshire.
