Interior North Light - Cloudy Day Afternoon Late Winter

This painting is about layers in many ways. The most overt is the layering of the physical objects front to back, stacked up and down. But I was also leaning into a technical paint application process that involves creating intentional strata of paint film to enhance the illusion of space. It's similar to the the depth illusions in bas relief sculpture. Thin paint falls back, thick paint comes forward.
Additionally I approached this piece with the clear and disciplined intent to avoid any illustrational rendering or drawing. Every piece of paint laid down was, as purely as possible an optical copy of what I saw before me; balanced only by formal design ideas and not influenced by illusion realism. I wanted to see what would happen. And this is it. Honestly this experiment was a turning point in my ability to control my intent in a painting.
