This 30" x 24" framed lithograph by Russian-American scene painter Raphael Soyer depicts a small studio set up in grayscale. The primary source of color in the composition comes from the artist paints, which are also used to emphasize other smaller components of the work. The sketch hung on the wall facing the viewer features a nude female figure. The roman numerals in the bottom left corner suggest a limited edition set of 25 prints had been created of this lithograph, with this one being labeled as number 6 in the series.
Raphael Soyer was born Raphael Schoar in Russia on December 25th, 1899. Their family emigrated to the United States in 1912. Having been raised in a household that prioritized education and the arts, he and his twin brother Moses studied art at the Cooper Union in Manhattan. Soyer would ultimately become well known for his depictions of life in New York City and portraits of fellow artists and friends that included Allen Ginsberg, Edward Hopper, and Alice Neel.
