Hitoshi, meaning “equal” in Japanese, is constructed using painted recycled grocery bags. The modules may be hung in several different ways, passing on the creative process to the buyer. Japanese names pay tribute to the original origami masters. A representation of transformation & reminder to never dismiss humble beginnings.

Series: EKO
The EKO series uses painted recycled grocery bags as the primary medium to create intricate but resilient sculptures. The bags are first hand painted before being torn into small pieces. Each piece is then folded into petal-like shapes before being applied to the canvas, one by one. Each sculpture is made up of hundreds to thousands of petals. Everything in the series has a Japanese name to pay tribute to the original paper workers and origami masters.

What I love about this series is the journey of the grocery bag itself. Something so far away from being glamorous gets transformed into this striking modern sculpture. This is a reminder to never judge or dismiss humble beginnings.
