This 32.25" x 46" acrylic painting on canvas by Serbian artist Katarina Dordevic explores the reintroduction of artifactual symbolism into a contemporary context. This work depicts four, biomorphic and fossil-like forms as central figures of the composition. Dordevic intends for the two larger forms to the left to represent the two driving forces of human behavior, Eros and Thanatos. Eros represents the life instinct, and Thanatos represents death. The energetic exchange between the two happens as they continuously struggle with one another in the psyche. The figures are marked by color - the largest in teal, while the other three are painted orange, green and a deep gray. Many of Dordevic's works are framed within the larger composition using blocks of color and a border of crosshatch-like textural marks.
