I don't normally reference photos for paintings, but this one is directly referenced: Surprise Lake in the Goat Rocks Wilderness in Washington state. We backpacked 6-7 miles in to a lake that never seemed to arrive. That night we could see the light from the moon on the lake and waited for moon to appear above the lake, which we never saw.
