About Boyd
I’ve worked with wood my whole life. I grew up in Missoula, Montana, helping my dad build our log home from timbers cut in Pattee Canyon and hardwood flooring salvaged from job sites around town. Rudy Autio lived in our neighborhood and I was fascinated watching him do his art. My parents encouraged independence and creativity as well as good craftsmanship. In 2nd grade I designed and hand-carved a 5' totem pole. In my teens I started work as a carpenter, then later became a building contractor, making fine furniture in my spare time. Now retired, I create unique vessels, bowls, and other wooden objects.
Artist Statement
I get great satisfaction from taking a rough chunk of wood and bringing out the hidden beauty nature created. My inspiration comes from this process, from collaborating with nature in this way. I work with hand and power tools to reveal the beauty of wood in all its forms. In creating my vessels and bowls I use wood from trees that have been pruned or cut down and would otherwise be destroyed.
I’m drawn to imperfections in the material and the challenge this gives me. My art is in showing the beauty in the imperfections and using them as a pleasing contrast to the precise craftsmanship I strive for. Wood simply feels good—to touch, to look at, to use and enjoy—and I think one reason is that it connects us to nature. I hope my pieces give the pleasure of this connection to others.
