The Best Opportunities for Artists in August 2021

Katie Carey | July 28, 2021

Every month our team sets out to find the best competitions, workshops, residencies, and artist grants going on—all with deadlines coming up this month. August’s list includes a month-long residency in the beautiful city of Athens, Greece, a ceramics internship that comes with a $400/week stipend, and a grant intended to support NYC-based working artists who have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.

We continue to work to make it easier for you to find opportunities and new open calls for artists so that you can spend less time searching and more time making art.

Tusen Tak

“Tusen Takk” means “thousand thanks” in Norwegian and is often used to convey appreciation for something received, like a wonderful dinner or a helping hand. It’s with this same sense of gratitude and grace that the founders of the Tusen Takk Foundation wanted to express: thankfulness to artists, writers, and composers for the transcendent truth and intangible joy they give back to the world in their work.

Excellence is the sole criterion by which artists are offered a Tusen Takk residency. We welcome and encourage applicants of all backgrounds. We believe that artists of all races, color, gender, age, religions, sexual orientations, national origins, or abilities can benefit from having a time and a place to create work. Our aim is to continually improve Tusen Takk to be a safe, supportive environment for achieving this objective.

Tricksters & Transformation

We invite submissions for a juried exhibition: “Tricksters & Transformation.”

Textiles have the universally demonstrated capacity for holding meaning, establishing connections, and creating healing. As we emerge, on many levels, from the darkness into the light of awareness of isolation and injustice we have an opportunity and obligation to examine the status quo. This exhibition will allow the artist to step into the now and make work that opens doors within themselves, thereby acting as a portal to a collective resurgence into a renewed relationship with the world. This awakening inspires transformation.

There is a deep potential for the artist to act as trickster, agent of change, or boundary crosser. After the pandemic and the social upheaval of the past eighteen months, the artist has gained renewed agency for creating more enlightened definitions of meaning and new ways of seeing.

The pandemic can be a portal, serving as a provocation to transformation.

The Shadow Pandemic: Violence Against Women Billboard Arts Exhibition

SaveArtSpace has partnered with Take Heart You Are Not Alone and curator David F. Martin to assemble a visual framework that will draw awareness to the issue of domestic violence. Our goal is to use artwork to capture the attention of the public in order to provide them with contact information for much-needed community resources available to victims and survivors.

Take Heart You Are Not Alone is seeking artists to create artwork that communicates the issues faced by victims and survivors of domestic violence. Artwork that can illustrate the impact domestic violence has on individuals, families, and communities including LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, Indigenous, and immigrant communities. It is our desire that the artwork can also provide hope and healing to victims and survivors.

We feel that art can provide a means to explore community responses and showcase how people help address and hopefully prevent domestic violence in their families and neighborhoods. This critical support provides survivors a path to navigating their healing journeys.

Artists of all ages and talent levels are invited to submit their artwork between July 12 and August 23, 2021. We particularly encourage and welcome submissions from artists who are themselves victims or survivors of domestic violence and/or are members of the LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, Indigenous and immigrant communities.
