Even though we are still in the midst of a global pandemic and previous engagements may be canceled or shifted, our team still went out and found the best competitions, workshops, residencies, and artist grants still going on—all with deadlines coming up this month. 

We continue to work to make it easier for you to find emergency funding, residencies that are open to the public, and new open calls for artists so that you can spend less time searching and more time making art.

Artist Grants:

TILA Studios COVID-19 Above Four Fund

In an effort to sustain black women’s contributions in the art industry during the COVID -19, TILA Studios is launching a recurring monthly fund beginning at $1,000 to support black women artists nationwide. This fund supports black women who have: experienced a stalled gig or opportunity, lost of income from day job being temporarily closed, stipend for an on-going art project with a specific purpose and direction. We want to sustain our momentum, continue empowering black women and their practice, the only way we do this is if we are the change and the support we want to see.

Betty Bowen Award

Administered by the Seattle Art Museum, the annual Betty Bowen Award honors a Northwest artist for their original, exceptional, and compelling work. The winner is awarded an unrestricted cash prize of $15,000, and a selection of his or her works is shown at the Seattle Art Museum in the spring. In addition, up to two Special Recognition Awards in the amount of $2,500 are often granted at the discretion of the Betty Bowen Committee.

The Halstead Grant

The Halstead Grant is an annual award worth $7,500 for emerging silver jewelry artists to help jewelry entrepreneurs create a strategy to kick-start their careers.

Jorge and Darlene Pérez Prize in Public Art & Civic Design

The 2020 Pérez Prize in Public Art & Civic Design will recognize an artist with a track record of exemplary work created or produced with intention to advance community, civic, or social good by implementing art-based processes and/or projects that lead to positive change in the built environment of a local community. This includes increasing awareness of issues, promoting dialogue, shifting attitudes, promoting healing, motivating action, or improving conditions of equity, access, and inclusion.

AMOUNT: $30,000

DEADLINE: August 14, 2020

FINE PRINT: The Prize recipient will receive a $30,000 cash award that they can use to continue their pursuit of their creative work aligned with goals of creative transformation of the built environment. The recipient will also receive additional financial support that will enable them to access other national opportunities for further learning as well as dialogue and discussion about their work with national leaders in the arts and other allied fields. Artist Relief Emergency Grants: Cycle V

To support artists during the COVID-19 crisis, a coalition of national arts grantmakers have come together to create an emergency initiative to offer financial and informational resources to artists across the United States. Artist Relief will distribute $5,000 grants to artists facing dire financial emergencies due to COVID-19; serve as an ongoing informational resource; and co-launch the COVID-19 Impact Survey for Artists and Creative Workers, designed by Americans for the Arts, to better identify and address the needs of artists.

Innovate Grants

Innovate Grant is now accepting submissions for the Summer 2020 Cycle. Innovate Grant awards two grants each quarter, to one visual artist and one photographer. In addition to receiving a grant award, winners will be featured and recognized on our website and join a growing community of vibrant and talented artists.

Illuminations Grant for Black Trans Women Visual Artists

Queer|Art is pleased to introduce The Illuminations Grant for Black Trans Women Visual Artists. Developed and named in partnership with Mariette Pathy Allen, Aaryn Lang, and Serena Jara, this new annual $10,000 grant, awarded to draw attention to an existing body of work, sheds light on the under-recognized contributions of Black trans women visual artists and provides critical support to their continuing work.

Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant

In light of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the artist community, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts is creating a temporary fund to meet the needs of experimental artists who have been impacted by the economic fallout from postponed or canceled performances and exhibitions. For as long as our Board of Directors determines it is necessary and prudent to do so, the Foundation will disburse one-time $1,500 grants to artists who have had performances or exhibitions canceled or postponed because of the pandemic.

August Calls for Art:

Wells Art Contemporary

Wells Art Contemporary is an international visual arts competition created by artists for artists. The awards include £4,500 in cash prizes (approx. €5,000 and $5,700), mentoring, residencies, professional development, and exhibition opportunities in leading galleries in London and the south of England. Based in the UK, Wells Art Contemporary has established a strong reputation in the art world and is drawing artists from places as diverse as Australia, Azerbaijan, India, Italy, Korea, Japan and the United States.

WHO: All mediums are accepted (painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, film, print, etc.). All artists based in the UK or internationally, who are over the age of 18 on the 1st January 2020 are invited to apply.

The Magazine of Contemporary Art

THE MAGAZINE OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS is an online publication covering visual arts from around the world. It is designed to assume an international platform where artists can be connected directly with art professionals, bringing their art to a worldwide viewership of 3.2 billion internet users. The magazine is currently accepting submissions for its upcoming issue from visual artists relating to any medium.

FINE PRINT: Digital images of paintings, drawings, graphic art and 3D installations of any size will be considered without limitations to the artist’s age, nationality, or country of origin. 4th Annual Skies Art Competition

Fusion Art invites submissions for the 4th Annual Skies online art competition. For this competition, both 2D and 3D artists are invited to submit their best art and photography depicting the sky. The sky is everything that lies above the surface of the Earth, including the atmosphere and outer space.

Online Painting Lessons

Jane Hunt OPA, AIS, has created a unique learning system that combines the best parts of a live painting workshop with the focused tutorial aspect of watching a video. Each session is a carefully curated lesson that’s a mix of step by step painting process, graphics that explain concepts, and video segments so you can actually watch those principles being demonstrated. Each includes an in-depth lesson, video access, Q & A, assignments, and group critique and much more.

Forsaken

The SE Center is looking for all forms of imagery of the Forsaken, black-and-white and color, analog, digital or antique processes, photographers of all skill levels and locations are welcome. The Forsaken, places and belongings that once mattered, that have been left behind. Things once being of importance to humans… personal items, homes, special places, letters, etc. Anything that has been left behind or replaced. Any place or property that once had the importance to another. Another approach will be to examine work that pushes the boundaries of the concept, examining things like ownership and subsequent abandonment, rejection of ideas, or ideologies.

When talking about competitions and exhibitions dedicated to Contemporary Realism, The International ARC Salon is the largest in the world in terms of entries, and the most diverse in terms of categories and international participation. This makes the International ARC Salon Competition the most influential and far reaching competition for representational art in the world.

This juried call for art seeks art forms of all media that consider native plants that are currently threatened or endangered. Biodiversity is important to the health of the region we live in. Replanting after wildfires whether around homes, towns, parks or forests is needed. This online exhibition can help bring awareness and knowledge of plants, plant life cycles and how to use them effectively in our lives.

In 2020, artists need our support more than ever. Beacon Gallery is producing a one-night-only event to directly provide support to visual artists from sales of their work. Gallery Owner and Director, Christine O’Donnell, is hosting a juried exhibition of small works called “Art Dash” where artists will receive 100% of the sales.

EAT! 2020

J. Mane Gallery invites submissions for its EAT! online juried art exhibition. Food is essential to our survival. It is also one of the great pleasures in life. Francis Thompson Selects

Atlanta Photography Group (APG) is now taking entries for Francis Thompson Selects, APG’s feature exhibition for Atlanta Celebrates Photography (ACP), the month-long, citywide photography festival. The exhibition will be juried by Francis Thompson, Art Program Project Manager at JLL, a contemporary corporate art collection installed within office buildings throughout North America.

2020 Art Challenge Competition & Show

The Wethersfield Academy for the Arts is a 501C(3) non-profit organization, whose mission is to provide a classical education in the visual arts using traditional teaching methods and mentoring, by which artists refine their talents and develop practical skills. 2020 Firehouse Art Center Call For Artists

The Firehouse Art Center is now accepting applications for their 2021 exhibition calendar. Our exhibitions committee consists of artists, art administrators, business professionals, curators and art collectors. Preference is given to submissions that are culturally relevant with a unique perspective and the ability to provide a diverse art experience. Cutting edge contemporary work and multi-disciplinary artists are strongly encouraged. Group exhibitions and curatorial proposals are welcomed, as well as solo exhibition proposals from established and emerging artists in all mediums.

Located in downtown Omaha’s historic Old Market, the Bemis Center's 110,000 square foot facility accommodates a broad range of artistic activity. This independently driven atmosphere and communal environment encourage creative growth and experimentation to confront new challenges. This is a process-based residency; there is no expectation or promise of an exhibition in our first-floor galleries.

FINE PRINT: Selected artists-in-residence enjoy generous sized, private live/work studios complete with kitchen and bathroom. Artists-in-residence have 24-hour access to extensive installation and production spaces and the Okada Sculpture & Ceramics Facility, a 9,000 square foot industrial space used for large-scale sculpture fabrication. U.S.-based artists-in-residence receive a $1,000 USD monthly stipend and an additional $750 USD travel stipend. Learn more here.

 

Governor’s Island Artist Residency

Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) is excited to spearhead a new initiative with the Trust for Governors Island (TGI) and numerous Island-based organizations in response to the COVID-19 crisis and its devastating impacts across the NYC cultural landscape. Under the Governors Island Residency Initiative, participating organizations will reposition indoor spaces on the Island historically used for exhibitions and public programming as residencies or work spaces for artists and other members of the City’s cultural community for approximately three months in 2020. 

WHO: The Governors Island Residency Initiative endeavors to support artists, writers, cultural workers, creative practitioners living and working across New York City's five boroughs.

DATES: Residencies begin on a rolling basis in early September through early December 2020

LOCATION: New York, NY

DEADLINE: August 6, 2020

FINE PRINT: LMCC will transition a significant portion of the Arts Center at Governors Island's facilities to accommodate between 12–15 artists and/or small arts groups as a part of this open call. Please note that this open call is meant specifically to apply for a work space based at LMCC’s Arts Center and not any of the other affiliated organizations’ houses on the Island. The Studios at MASS MoCA Residency Program

The Studios is MASS MoCA’s artist and writers residency program situated within the museum’s factory campus and surrounded by the beautiful Berkshire Mountains. Operated by MASS MoCA’s Assets for Artists program, the residency runs year-round and hosts up to 12 artists at a time. 

WHO: Artists worldwide

DATES: Artists of any nationality can apply for stays of 2-8 weeks January - May

LOCATION: North Adams, MA

DEADLINE: August 8, 2020

FINE PRINT: The already subsidized, full-price residency fee is $650/week, but every applicant is considered for both merit- and need-based financial aid to lower this fee even more. Learn more here.


 

Oak Spring Garden Foundation Residency

In 2021 the Oak Spring Garden Foundation will host five separate five-week interdisciplinary residencies. Each session is designed to support eight artists who are pursuing work inspired by plants, gardens and landscapes. The goal of this residency program is to provide individuals with the time and space to pursue their own creative projects alongside other residents who may be examining the natural world from different perspectives. 

WHO: Artists, conservation practitioners, researchers, scholars, scientists or writers

LOCATION: Upperville, VA

DEADLINE: August 12, 2020

FINE PRINT: Applicants selected for this award will receive a $2,000 individual grant. The only requirement placed on residents after the initial introductory events is that they participate in a Residency Showcase during the final week of the residency. Learn more here.
