Complete Guide to 2021 Artist Grants & Opportunities

Emily Zupsic | January 5, 2021

Across the world, arts organizations continue to adapt to the pandemic and the changing regulations.

While some institutions have started to release their deadline for 2021, others have paused or indefinitely delayed their programming. Still, other arts institutions have formed to provide relief funds for artists.

Each year we send our team on a mission to find the best art opportunities, artist grants, and calls-for-entry for the upcoming year. This year looked a little different.

We have added a few new categories and will be monitoring the grants and prizes that have yet to be released and will update this post throughout the year.

Regardless, there are still a lot of opportunities to be had in 2021.

New grants, such as our own Artwork Archive Art Business Accelerator Grant, have formed in response to the needs of artists affected by COVID-19. Grants remain steady as a way for artists to supplement their income to ease the financial burden that often comes as part of being a working artist—especially over the last year. These grants listed help artists pay for materials, studio space, or even their rent, allowing artists to sustain themselves and their art practices during this difficult time.

While many residencies have changed the way they will operate or are postponing their residency dates, there are still upcoming opportunities to develop your work in a COVID-safe artist residency.

Below you will find a list of the top international open calls, residencies, fellowships, and awards that we believe will benefit artists during the upcoming year! The complete list is broken down into six categories: grants, residencies & fellowships, calls-for-entry, publications, COVID relief funds, and opportunity sites

We will be updating this list throughout the year, so make sure to bookmark the page, check back often and let us know if there is an opportunity that should be listed!

Natural Movement": Unapologetic Conversations of Hair and Nonconformity

The Delaware Contemporary is accepting submissions for a group exhibition based around the central ideas of  “Hair and the CROWN Act”. The CROWN Act, which stands for “Creating a Respectful and, Open World for Natural Hair,” is a law that prohibits race-based hair discrimination; namely the denial of employment, recreational, and educational opportunities because of hair texture or protective hairstyles including braids, locs, twist, or bantu knots.

For decades men and women of color have conformed to European societal standards, both culturally and institutionally in regards to their identity, and more specifically, by altering the natural growth of hair. How has this rhetoric and politics alienated people of color?  How does public discourse about hair and microaggressions play out in the role of institutions and opportunities of advancement? This exhibition asks how contemporary artists together with museums can progress this dialogue?
