This piece is inspired by the shoreline of Lake Cayuga in Upstate NY where my family owns a cottage. As a young girl I used to play with the larger rocks on the shale beach. They would sometimes be covered with seaweed, which I would style as hair, draw a face into the shale, and call them "mermaid rocks". There is a legend that the lake has a resident Sea Serpent and I fervently believed there were also mermaids living in the lake. A beautiful friend who loves mermaids wanted to pose for my painting, so this is also a portrait.
