On my first overnight sail I was nervous because it was pitch black on the ocean. I couldn't see six inches in any direction. I didn't know where I was going. Then the clouds parted and the stars became visible. Navigating by starlight was so easy and peaceful, I forgot I couldn't actually see the way. I stayed up all night watching Capricorn rise from the horizon, and was even a little sorry when the sun began to rise. There can be peace and shelter in the lost darkness. The shell is a rare murex whelk from Bull Island, South Carolina - likely a thousand years old and full of ancient wisdom.
