We rose in the winter darkness to drive through Big Bend National Park along Ross Maxwell Drive. Stopping at dawn for coffee from our ever-handy Thermos, I was photographing Burro Mesa PourOff (a colorful favorite spot of ours, and my painting destination that morning) when Jim, still warm in the comfort of the pickup truck pointed behind me. I turned to see sunrise gild the desert, with Santa Elena Canyon shadowed in the distance. Sometimes the things we don't look for are more special than the ones we seek!
