The harsh Chihuahuan Desert outside Terlingua, Texas shimmers with unexpected color as the sun sets onto the distant Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park. These jewel-tones last only moments each evening, and it is quite a light show. Hiking this part of the desert between Study Butte and the Chisos always makes me feel very small, but the vastness of this spectacular southwest landscape is especially overwhelming at dusk, when every blade of grass seems to glow with life.
