An out of the way two lane road weaves south through the Marfa plateau toward the Rio Grande, cutting through working ranches and tall grasslands. Abruptly, the tranquil highland pastures drop into a rugged, isolated canyon and the road becomes almost impassable as mysterious Chinati Peak rises in the distance. At sunset, reflected light paints everything it touches in reds and oranges and golds, while shadows creep into the vast valleys and folds of this amazing Pinto Canyon landscape, which is so rugged time has scarcely touched its surface.
