The inspiration of "Adelita in the Sun" is the courageous and committed young Mexican women during the Revolution of 1910, who evolved from supporters of the Revolution to actual soldiers - even rising to the ranks of being commanders of Revolutionary forces. They collectively were known as "Adelitas." The painting is a celebration of the strength and resolve of women active in social struggle.
"Adelita in the Sun" was created for the "Strong Women" show. This piece was so well received that it has become one of my iconic pieces. The image was used as the show's invitation postcard, and many people have confessed to framing it!
