Some stars are much bigger than our sun and these large stars burn up all their fuel relatively quickly and then explode. This is called a supernova. This particular star remnant is called the Veil Nebula and only a portion of the full circle is shown here.
The remnants of the exploded star spread out in a sphere, seen by us as a circle of glowing blue and red gas, which returns the elements of the star to space where new stars can be formed.
