Art has been an important part of life for Gary Hoff since he was boy. His first paintings came about during his teen years when his grandmother gave him a set of oil paints and taught him how to mix colors. Also in his teens he attended a vocational college in Tulsa Oklahoma, receiving a diploma in product illustration. During those years he illustrated an electronics textbook and produced a number of commissioned drawings.
After graduating from university, Hoff spent five years as an Air Force pilot, eventually leaving the service to attend graduate school and then medical school. Despite these career detours, and despite years of clinical practice, he continued making paintings which found their way into private collections.
Today Hoff makes traditional oil paintings using centuries-tested materials and methods. He paints portraits on commission and produces figurative works, landscapes, and still life in abundance. For the past several years he has been a regular at arts festivals around the Midwest, showing work in Omaha, Des Moines, Minneapolis, Kansas City and elsewhere. A member of the prestigious Salmagundi Art Club in New York’s Greenwich Village, he shows and sells there regularly.
