When I made the Serpentine Bench, I was thinking about the idea of a snake, a stream, a wave, or a current of air. What is interesting to me is the motion that is created by these things that are all around us in the natural world. Some people wonder why I make art that is functional, why try and convey this theme in the form of a bench? My answer is, that, this sculptural furniture becomes a focal point for connecting our human world with that of the natural world. In a sense it is a story about that relationship and how it can be imagined as a positive one. This particular bench is made from boxelder and walnut wood that I salvaged in Madison WI. The base was solid wood and I had to hollow it out while the wood was still green and then kiln dry it. The twisting back rest is made from multiple pieces of walnut that I glued together into the shape I wanted. Thank you for your interest in this work.
