Artist: Fletcher Williams (African American, b. 1987)
Fletcher Williams III is a Charleston-based interdisciplinary artist whose theoretical and conceptual art making practice is rooted in a southern vernacular. Williams studied drawing, painting, printmaking, graphic design, and sculpture at The Cooper Union, where he received a BFA in 2010 and worked for several years thereafter as a freelance graphic designer. While the core of Williams’ practice focused multimedia object making, a significant portion of his education was dedicated to studying ritual theory through the lenses of anthropology and sociology. His work has been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions, including recently at Hodges Taylor Gallery, Charlotte, NC; Redux Contemporary Art Center, Charleston SC; Aiken-Rhett House, Charleston SC; The Mint Museum Uptown, Charlotte NC; 701 Center for Contemporary Art, Columbia, SC; Gateway Project Spaces, Newark, NJ; Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Art, Brooklyn, NY; and, San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art + African American Museum of Fine Art, San Diego, CA. In 2019, Williams was a visiting artist at the Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, and is the recipient of grants from Art Matters Foundation, The Dean Collection 20 St(art)-Ups, and, South Arts Southern Prize and State Fellowship, among others.
