Rick’s preferred medium is acrylic on canvas or masonite. His work is included in several collections inside and outside the United States. “Fine art is creating something that hasn’t been done before. An original concept is more important than a superior technique.“
“My journey began many years ago, enrolled in Rhode Island School of Design with the intent of becoming an architect. I began my education studying design but was soon introduced to painting and illustration. Suddenly the ability to express myself on a two-dimensional surface was all I wanted. After graduating in 1970, I began wandering across the country in search of new experiences and inspiration. I remember my travels fondly, but it became clear that I needed a place to anchor me both physically and spiritually. As a teenager, I spent much of my time on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Memories of unspoiled beauty, solitude, and horizons eventually led me back to the barrier islands, and in1973, I happily called them my home. Alongside the intrepid locals, I took on hobbies like fishing, surfing, carpentry, and gardening. I established relationships and started a family. As life progressed, my love for the islands remained constant and I never stopped painting. Whether I'm painting a landscape of grassy fields or a simple portrait of a fisherman, I have the Outer Banks to thank for continuous inspiration over the years. Just as I have done since I arrived on the islands, I will continue to follow the rise and setting of the moon and sun. I will enjoy the restless wind and walks on the beach with my grandchildren. I will observe and appreciate the natural beauty of these extraordinary islands and I will continue to paint.”
